Biography

“Nauseating Nancy” was the nickname of Philly-bred punk-rocker chick Nancy Spungen, but her bleached hair and snarling lips lent her a hard-edged appeal that was far from queasy! A leather-clad groupie who followed such bands as Aerosmith, Bad Company, and The Ramones, she will always and forever be known as one of the original queens of punk, reigning alongside her king, the Sex Pistols’ Sid Vicious. Nancy was a troubled child from birth, developing a drug habit in her early teens, and dabbling in prostitution to support her bad habits. At 17, she moved to New York, and fell into the burgeoning punk-rock scene, hanging out with Debbie Harry and The New York Dolls. The petite, 5’1” powerhouse was infatuated with Jerry Nolas from The Dolls, and followed him to London—only to forget him when she was introduced to Sid Vicious by Johnny Rotten. The two quickly became the Romeo and Juliet of the underground, and developed a rather unhealthy co-dependency on each other, eventually adding to the demise of the Sex Pistols. Sid and Nancy moved to New York in 1978 and took a room at the Chelsea Hotel, where Nancy was mysteriously and tragically found dead in October 1978, at the age of 20, lying in a bathroom with a knife wound to the stomach. Although never confirmed one way or another, Sid was charged with her murder, but died of a heroine dose while out on bail in February 1979. (Insert 30 seconds of “Anarchy in the U.K.” here for a breather.) You can relive the sass and snap between the couple during happier times in both the documentary D.O.A. (1980), and the Pistols biopic The Filth and the Fury (2000) (the same film clip was used in both), where Nancy flashes Sid and the camera.
