Based on The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe (1972), Yves Robert’s French comedy classic, The Man with One Red Shoe (1985) is a similar tale of mistaken identity wrought large. Tom Hanks stars as Richard Harlin Drew, an everyday Joe who happens to draw the attention of a domestic spy unit at the Pentagon. Drew has no idea that he’s being bugged, wiretapped, and watched around the clock, which makes his extramarital affair with CIA agent Maddy (Lori Singer) something of an inadvertent double-cross. Dabney Coleman, Jim Belushi, and Carrie Fisher round out the all-star supporting cast, but it’s Singer who shines by donning an evening gown that leaves little to the imagination.
