Director James D. Mortellaro stages a fake snuff film with startlingly realistic effect in the gritty, low-budget horror thriller Video X: The Dwayne and Darla-Jean Story (2003). Designed to look like home-video footage of a reckless pair of homicidal lovers, Mortellaro’s film stars Joey Gibson and Michelle Moretti as Dwayne Foote and Darla-Jean Stanton––Ozark-bred lowlifes who embark on a grisly murder rampage when life in Kentucky gets too dull. Of course, there’s a fine line between love and hate, and when Foote and Stanton aren’t upping their body count they’re often busy boffing. It’s an irresistible treat to watch Moretti put down her shotgun and take a slide between the sheets.
